Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth is very important for keeping your gums, mouth, and teeth healthy. After you lose your baby teeth, you only have one set left for your whole life, so it’s vital you take care of them. 

When you brush your teeth, you remove something called plaque. Plaque is bacteria's and food remnants that adhere and accumulate on your teeth. Food and drinks containing sugar increases the amount of plaque and the risk of caries and de-calcifications (white spots).

We recommend using the modified fluoride toothpaste technique since research has shown that this method is more effective in reducing the risk of cavities and de-calcifications.

Follow these steps to properly brush your teeth:


Use 2 cm (3/4”) of toothpaste containing fluoride on a wet toothbrush.


Spread the toothpaste evenly on the teeth in the upper and lower arches.


Brush all surfaces for at least two minutes.


Use a small amount of water with the toothpaste remaining in the mouth and filter the mixture between the teeth by active cheek movements for 30 seconds before spitting it out.


Avoid further rinsing with water. Avoid drinking and eating for two hours.

Brush at least twice a day, after breakfast and at night before going to bed. One trick to remember how long to brush your teeth for is to sing the alphabet song in your head twice!
