Taking Care of Your Braces

Taking care of your braces is an important part of your treatment and can help minimize the risk of caries and gum disease. 

Here is all the information you need to keep your teeth, gums and braces in great condition.

Brushing Your Teeth

Brush your teeth for 2 minutes in the morning, after meals and before bed, using the following technique:

  • Use 2 cm (3/4”) of toothpaste containing fluoride on a wet toothbrush.
  • Spread the toothpaste evenly on the teeth in the upper and lower arches.
  • Brush all surfaces for two minutes.
  • Use a small amount of water with the toothpaste remaining in the mouth and filter the mixture between the teeth by active cheek movements for 30 seconds before spitting it out.
  • Avoid further rinsing with water.
  • Avoid drinking and eating for two hours.
  • Brush at least twice a day, after breakfast and at night before going to bed.



Floss at leas once a day using the following technique:

  • Insert floss behind archwire
  • Gently clean the sides of teeth and under the gums using an up-and-down motion
